Break bulk or General Cargo

Break-bulk services are designed to meet your needs for shipping over-sized, odd-sized or over-weight cargo. It is the best shipping option when goods to be shipped are too large or heavy to fit in a standard container or if destination port is smaller and not prepared to accommodate container ships.

Trust is everything

Break bulk requires more third party handling than container freight, and if you are shipping your goods this way, you should make sure that you are working with a freight forwarder you can rely on.

A full range of possibilities

We provide complete transportation solutions including preloading and loading on general cargo, project cargo including over-sized units or heavy lifts. We supervise the entire shipping process, from loading the cargo to delivering it directly to its final destination. Instead of containerized, break-bulk involves moving large cargo in smaller units, such as pallets, barrels, drums, boxes, or bags.

Oversized cargo:
no matter with us

Oversized cargo can be loaded on deck or under deck. On Deck Stowage is reserved for Cargo that are too large to be loaded into the hold and are not damaged by water can be directly loaded on deck. Many break bulk vessels are equipped with heavy lifting cranes that can handle heavier loads safely and faster than dockside cranes. This can speed up the loading/unloading process and reduce shipment costs.

FCL Shipments
(Full Cargo Loading)

We have FCL Sea Freight Contracts with many prime carriers, which currently gives us availability 52 weeks per year. We load and lash your goods in an optimal way so that they arrive safe and sound on time at the place of destination.

Several options are available:

DOOR TO PORT SERVICE

The container is positioned at your door, you load the container and once you have finished loading the container is sealed and delivered to the port of discharge and shipped to the port of destination.

DOOR TO DOOR SERVICE

This type of service is very similar to the door to port, but with some differences. A door to door service including customs clearance at the port of discharge and delivery at the customer’s home.

FULL SERVICE

This type of service provides all of the above (positioning of the container, customs clearance and delivery), plus packing and loading of the furniture and in some area we can unload with inside delivery; the customer does nothing but watch.

The choice will depend on the cost, your level of preparation for shipment loading and the arrangements you have with your consignee.

Modern Full Container Load transport is usually fully computerised and capable of providing transparency so that the shipper can track and trace the progress of the shipment.

We will arrange the paperwork for you as required by the type of service chosen: including the Bill of Lading (B/L), advice to the receiving port, and customs clearance.

Putting this all together means that importers and exporters have a choice of services & equipment that suit their budget and needs.

Container Sizes

The bulk of shipments are commercial goods, and the system of moving standard and stackable steel boxes worldwide has flourished thanks to the creation of International ISO standards.

These intermodal bulk containers can be conveyed by:

  • Ships
  • Semi-trailers pulled by trucks
  • Trains

The most popular sizes are:

  • 20 foot: 20’ long x 8’ wide x 8 ½’ high external (c. 6.1m x 2.4m x 2.6m)
  • 40 foot: 40’ long x 8’ wide x 8 ½’ high external (c. 12.2m x 2.4m x 2.6m)

Increasingly used by bulk shippers is the Hi-Cube 40 foot, which has a 9 ½’ height.

The maximum payload mass is approx.:

  • 22 tonnes for a 20’ container.
  • 27 tonnes for 40’ container.

LCL
(Less-than a Container Load)

If your consignment will not fill an complete container, then you can use our LCL shipping services, including a safe loading and part loads to all major ports in the world from the USA.

Sharing the container

Sharing the container with another shipment allows us to keep the price down. We manage the goods flow and transit times and costs. We track and monitor the shipment to keep you informed about the arrival of your goods to destination.

Whereas air freight

Whereas air freight focuses on weight, ships are able to handle almost any load. Thus the most important cost factor is how much volume they can accommodate. This means that LCL rates are based on a system that takes package measurements into account and converts them into a density figure:

  • it is the Weight or Measurement rule (WM).
  • The higher of the weight, or the measure calculation, applies.
  • Shippers work around cubic meter measurements (cbm).
  • You will be charged for a minimum 1 cbm under LCL rules even if you have a very small shipment.
  • There are 33 cbm in a 20 foot container and 66 in a 40 foot container.
  • Converting cbm into what is known as chargeable shipping volume is done using standard conversions set by shippers: these vary so that some may work on 1 cbm = 500kg, others may work on up to 1000 kg (check with your LCL freight forwarder).
  • If the actual weight is lower than this, then the chargeable shipping volume applies: if the weight is higher, there is a penalty because the weight applies.
  • In the USA different measures apply and they use 45 lb. per US cubic foot.
